As a Nutraceutical Consultant, I’ve been trained to look at the body and it’s systems from a more scientific aspect; facts, not hype.

As a Professional Makeup Artist and Skin Care Consultant I am frequently asked for my advice on natural recommendations for various skin issues. Not surprisingly, among the most frequent questions are about psoriasis.

Experts now agree that psoriasis is an auto-immune disease. There seem to be 10 psoriasis triggers:

1) Stress – yet another reason to relax, take deep breaths.

2) Allergies – Researchers have found a possible link between the two. Avoid allergens to reduce possible flare ups.

3) Alcohol -Avoid it altogether! Instead of downing a beer or wine, try iced green tea instead which is very high in antioxidants.

4) Cold/Dry Weather – keep your skin moisturized by using thick creamy lotions that are FRAGRANCE FREE. Also for drier climates, the use of a humidifier will help your skin altogether.

5) Tattoos and Acupuncture – Any repeated piercing of the skin causes trauma which can cause new lesions to appear. Typically within 10-14 days.

6) Medications – Some drugs used to treat psychiatric disorders, heart disease and arthritis can trigger psoriasis. As always, talk to your doctor.

7) Infections – Common infections such as yeast, thrush, strep throat and staph are all known psoriasis triggers.

8) Cuts and Bruises – Any type of trauma to the skin can cause new lesions. Take particular care when trimming your nails and shaving and take extra measures to prevent bug bites and sunburn.

9) Smoking – Enough said.

10) Hormones – Because puberty and menopause seem to trigger psoriasis patches, hormones are often thought to be linked.

So what else can you do? My thoughts, three things…

1) Move your body for at least one hour per day! What most people don’t realize is that your lymphatic system is a very important part of your immune system. It runs along side your circulatory system but unlike your circulatory system, it has no pump! It relies heavily on the movement of your body to function properly.

So shake it like you mean it! Take the stairs instead of the elevator! Park further from the door! Dance with your kids! It doesn’t really matter what you do, just move it!

2) While exercise, drinking plenty of water and eating properly are surely a great path to optimal skin and overall health, there’s definitely another thing you can do. Supplement your diet with OPCs (with your doctor’s blessings, of course).

OPCs are a class of flavonoids that acts as antioxidants in the human body. There are literally hundreds of major health benefits related to one particular OPC complex, Pycnogenol. It has been called “the skin vitamin” and “the oral cosmetic” by many users (even though it is technically not a vitamin). Even my family and own clients absolutely rave about it’s wonderful benefits which go way beyond skin health.

I can get really nerdy when speaking on the importance of OPCs and Pycnogenol in particular so I’ll save the details for another post.

As always, you can call us at 843-388-5101 to schedule an appointment for a personal consultation. For more info on Pycnogenol, go to www.pycnogenol.com.

3) Very important! Talk to your doctor. Communicate with them. Be your own best HEALTH CARE Advocate.

Your health should be OPTIMAL not optional!
